Need For Speed III Modern Patch v1.6.1 [2016/10/28] (HD + Widescreen + Portable)

“Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit” is the first 3D game of my life. When I've seen the game first time, I was extremely amazed because I'd never seen 3D games before. It was in 2000. I can't count hours which I've spent in the Split Screen mode with my cousin. And the music... it's so awesome, so I'd recorded it on an audio cassette, and listened it hundreds of times.

And now, years later, I had tried to play this game. But the game refused to run on modern hardware. So, I had tried to investigate how to fix it. I had a little carried away by this. As the result I've created an impressive patch. 25000+ lines of assembly code, 150+ days of reverse-engineering and coding, 40 sheets of A4 paper were covered with writing during development, a huge list of changes...

Hometown in widescreen resolution

Key Features

  • Full widescreen and HD resolutions support. You can easily use resolutions like 1920×1200. Now the game supports all aspect ratios from the 5:4 to 16:9, inclusive 4:3 and 16:10. HUD will be adopted automatically for every aspect ratio.
  • Improved graphics. No more cars with non-rotating wheels, better textures and models for other's cars (original game reduces size of textures even on maximum graphics settings), better graphics in the rear view, etc.
  • New graphics settings: Rear View Detail (High/Medium/Low), Rear View Camera From (In Car Camera/Active Camera, it decreases the blind spot), Fog (On/Off, like in the NFS4), Wide View Angle setting (useful for the widescreen resolutions).
  • Fog effect and light beams support in DirectX 6/7 (they were exclusive effects for the 3dfx Voodoo).
  • Portability. All system settings are loaded from the ini file. No more registry!
  • Compatibility. Most problems with modern Windows were fixed. Full support of multi-core processors. Original game can work properly only on one core. This change dramatically improves performance of the nGlide and the dgVoodoo.
  • Alt+Tab support. You can safely minimize the game when nGlide or dgVoodoo driver is used.
  • Built-in screenshoter. Just press Print Screen key, and a screenshot will be saved into the screenshots subdirectory in the JPG/PNG/BMP format.
  • Improved keyboard support in the menu. Now it is much more consistent. You can also use the Tab and Shift+Tab to switch between elements.
  • Better modding abilities. The game doesn't crash when high-poly cars are used. Also it possible to use huge textures up to 2048×2048 (original limit was 256×256).
  • Optimizations. 10 times faster gameplay loading on modern systems. To skip loading animation just press any key.
  • Bugfixes. More than 200 changes at all!

Before and after: cars have better textures, side mirrors don't disappear

How to install

  1. Copy FEDATA and GAMEDATA directories from the NFS3 CD to a new empty directory.
  2. Extract contents of the nfs3_modern_patch.7z (1.6MB) into that directory with replacement of files.
  3. Done!

If you are a server, ports 1030 and 9803 have to be accessible from the network, so you have to add the appropriate permit rule in your firewall for the nfs3.exe and configure a port forwarding properly. If you're a client, port forwarding isn't required.

Plans

Donated: $270.
Status: suspended.

Planned features:

  • [Done] Sharp fonts and other elements in menus on D3D renderers, just like when Glide renderers are used.
  • [Done] The problem with visible black polygons (e.g. near the Old Church) on the DX7 renderer will be solved.
  • [Done] Movies support for the DX8 renderer.
  • [Done] 32bpp rendering for movies. Menu will also work in 32bpp video mode and it will look better. Now it works in 16bpp.
  • Simple windowed mode for the DX6/DX7/DX8 renderers. It will be possible to enable it using ini file.
  • Investigation about how to add an ability to restore minimized game when it works in fullscreen mode.
  • Separate “Frame Size” and “Frame Cropping” graphics settings instead of the current combined one.
  • Rewriting of the code which uses the mouse cursor in the exclusive mode. The game will use the default system behavior of the mouse cursor. It will solve many small problems with the mouse cursor in this game. For example, your cursor will be able to leave the window of the game (when it works in a window) without pressing any keys. Also it will solve problems with mouse lagging on some computers.
  • Solving of the problems with loading of ghost and replay files from other players (when the other player has a little bit different set of cars in his game).
  • An optional ability to change structure of the game directories using the ini file. It may be useful for modding. It will be more flexible than the install.win from the original versions. For example, you will be able to move all save files to some separate directory (e.g. "savedata").
  • An optional ability to load a thrash driver from the root directory, as it was in the original version of the game.

These features are planned for the v1.6.1, v1.6.2 and v1.6.3. A beta version is here.

I have both games installed and I see literally no difference

No, they are much different. And I'm not alone. I know many NFS3 fans that don't like NFS4's car handling also.

Also I don’t care for the menu looks and I always turn off HUD completley and cockpit view on for proper driving expirience. 3D models are good for that year.

And I'm doing absolutely opposite thing. I prefer to enable HUD, and remove “In Car” camera completely. I like to use “Heli Cam” for the most time, and “Bumper Cam” sometimes.

Strange me and my friend don't see any difference while driving but nevermind that. I just did a quick test with NFS4 patch and it's working. Few things that I noticed are that FPS is locked to 60(not that I need more) and missing widescreen resolutions. I will do further testing when I have more time. Also I've sent you a mail so please read it when you have the time.

    missing widescreen resolutions

As you can see in the readme, there is still no widescreen resolutions support.

Also I’ve sent you a mail so please read it when you have the time.

I haven't received any mails last time. Please try again :)

The major reasons why NFS 4 is better are the innovative carreer mode, the damage model and lots of new tracks. Buy an own car, repair damages, buy upgrade parts, sell your car, buy a better one, start a new championship with lots of tournaments, win medailles, get even more money and unlock new cars and tracks. While in NFS 3 you can only drive one knockout and one tournament. Game finished!
I think the menu in NFS 4 looks awesome and the music there is brillant as NFS 3. But when you don't like NFS 4 for some reason, why not making it better with your patches? You could fix, change, tweak and optimise everything what you want (if possible of course).

But let's continue talking about the proportions. I think we misunderstand us, VEG.

    1. NFS 3 has NOT correct wide-screen with your patch. As you can see here the image is just cutted on the top and the bottom.

    4:3
    http://fs5.directupload.net/images/160419/f8ja4qiy.jpg

    16:10
    http://fs5.directupload.net/images/160419/7yf4qnu5.jpg

    16:9
    http://fs5.directupload.net/images/160419/8pkq9i5a.jpg

Correct wide-screen would be when you don't cut the image, but add new field-of view on the left and the right.

    2. Now, there's an other problem: When playing with one of these aspect ratios in 16:9 full-screen resolution, we will get different proportions. It's normal that 4:3 will get stratched, but the proportions are wrong in both cases (stretched and unstretched). The only correct proportion is when playing in 16:10. Then the back lights are completely round and everything looks realistic. This is how it should look in allother resolutions too. Here are the stretched versions:

    4:3 @16:9 wide-screen
    http://fs5.directupload.net/images/160419/r8nvb7dw.jpg

    16:10 @16:9 wide-screen
    http://fs5.directupload.net/images/160419/aqnypq7g.jpg

    16:9 native
    http://fs5.directupload.net/images/160419/8pkq9i5a.jpg

As you can see, the proportions in the first example are stretched (too flat and wide car), in the middle it is realistic and the last example it compressed (high and slim car).

The problem is that that you use 4:3 native proportions and cut the image on the top and the bottom to realize 16:9 without stretching. But this is not correct! You should stretch 4:3 to 16:10 and then add left and right new fov to realize the even wider 16:9. Then you have correct proportions and full image fov. If you could fix this in the patch or make an option tothe nfs3.ini that everyone can change the fov parameter that would be the best solution.

    Thanks

  6. #106
    Tuurngait

And you will even see the sun in 16:10 while in 16:9 it's completely cutted out of the image. In 4:3 you will see most of the sky. So please stretch 4:3 to 16:10 for best proportions and then add new fov left and right tohave everything perfect. No cuts in the image and nicest proportions :-)

    Tuurngait

And an other question: I never had an intro movie in NFS 3, is it normal? In the ini of your patch there is an extra option for intro movie, but even when I set "NoIntro=0" there is no intro video playing. I know that PlayStation version has an intro, but not PC version. Or there's a trick to get the intro in NFS 3?

  8. #108
    VEG Author

    the damage model

It's an arcade racing game. Damage model isn't required for this type of racing games. Sometimes it makes such games even worse.

Buy an own car, repair damages, buy upgrade parts, sell your car, buy a better one, start a new championship with lots of tournaments, win medailles, get even more money and unlock new cars and tracks.

I don't like these things in all modern NFS games. I always using cheats to unlock all tracks and cars in the NFS4. BTW, I don't like the Tournament and Knockout modes also. I had played them maybe twice in my life. I prefer the Single Race and Hot Pursuit modes, especially in the Split Screen. Other modes are mostly useless for me.

But when you don’t like NFS 4 for some reason, why not making it better with your patches?

It is very time consuming thing. It requires weeks and months of work. However, I hadn't said that developing of the NFS4 Modern Patch stopped forever. So, some day I'll port some things from the NFS3 Modern Patch to the NFS4. Also I have a list of my favorite games which I also would like to fix (e.g. Future Cop L.A.P.D.). So, I can't promise anything.

    (if possible of course)

Everything is possible, the main problem is the time. It is limited.

Correct wide-screen would be when you don’t cut the image, but add new field-of view on the left and the right.

That's not true. Correct widescreen support means that the game have to be rendered with the right proportions and the HUD have to be adopted to widescreen resolutions. FOV can be V– or H+. If you don't like FOV V– and like FOV H+, it doesn't mean that FOV V– is not right widescreen support. It's just your favor. I had decided to use V– to be consistent with the existent “2:1 Field of View” setting and to conform with the “In Car” camera's cockpit images, and it works exactly how I would like. If you wish to increase horizontal FOV (as FOV H+ does), just use the new Wide View Angle setting. And it even works with non-widescreen resolutions. But cockpit images are 4:3, and it is not possible to extend them on the left and on the right, so they are always rendered in the same way ignoring the View Angle setting.

This patch renders everything as it was in the original version of the game. When you're using any native resolution, all objects will have the same proportions, as they have in the 4:3 resolutions in the original version of the game. Look at these screenshots again:
    http://veg.by/files/nfs3/images/screenshot_011_1280x960.jpg — a real 1280×960 (4:3).
    http://veg.by/files/nfs3/images/screenshot_012_1280x960.jpg — 1280×720 (16:9) inscribed into the 1280×960.
As you can see, nothing is changed. Lamborgini Diablo SV looks absolutely the same on the both screenshots. It will be a mistake if every object will have different proportions depending on the current resolution.

I never had an intro movie in NFS 3, is it normal? In the ini of your patch there is an extra option for intro movie, but even when I set “NoIntro=0” there is no intro video playing.

NFS3 has intro. Probably, your version of the NFS3 doesn't have files of the intro movie. Just download my Modern Patch Bundle. It contains the intro movie and all official addons.

The problem with cut out parts in widescreen resolutions could be solved partially if you implement the button that would zoom out out the picture. This would work for NFS4 cause it doesn't have 4:3 cockpit images but for NFS3 it would suck.

Generally I prefer realistic simulation physics instead of easy arcade driving fun. And a damage model is a very important feature for a good racing game in my opinion. Because this will prevent people to drive like pigs or think "it is only a videogame" instead it adds consequences when making an accident, so it would be more for grown-ups who want decent racing. And in NFS 4 single player you have the option to turn it off. A damage model is also an excellent feature for the carreer mode in which you have to repair damages for money. A well designed carreer mode is the most important thing of a racing game, because THIS IS THE CORE GAME. A game would be boring if you could drive with any car on any track from the beginning. For this reason the best NFS for me is Porsche Unleashed. The tracks, the realistic physics, the damage model and the both excellent carreer modes makes this game to the most fascinating racing game ever.

I didn't think that FOV V- is correct widescreen, but when H+ is not compatible with some camera views then I understand why you decided to use V-. But I still think that you should strecth everything to 16:10 and then using V- for the little rest. This would mean better car proportions and less image cut. I know that this patch renders everything like it's in the original game, but when the original proportions are wrong, then why not improve it with this patch?

Thanks for the hint with the intro. I have the original german version and there is no intro movie, so I have to test your full downloadable bundle. Thanks!

    @Milan
In the current state I don't recommend the NFS 4 modern patch. Use the Stock Pack 1.76 by JimDiabolo instead. It's working perfectly and just could have tweaked camera positions similar to NFS 3 and less car chrome. But hopefully VEG will patch this in the future.

  14. #114
    Milan

Tuurngait, I am already using Stock Pack last 2-3 years and widescreen patch from some guy. I am just testing VEG early patch at moment. Also I don't think that VEG should stretch everything to 16:10 but he can include that as an option if he wants. I agree with you that Porsche Unleashed is a good simulation but the problem was that you could only drive Porsche and I like Ferrari more. Like VEG I also used cheat to unlock cars and tracks in NFS3 and 4 for practice and then played splitscreen mode with friends back in the day. For me NFS 4 will always be the perfect arcade racing game.

  15. #115
    Tuurngait

Normally "stretching" is a bad thing, but in this case it caused a positive effect by correcting the proportions. So this would be really the best solution and it would have even an other positive effect that the image would be less cutted. So two good things in one solution.

I'm also not a fan of Porsche cars, I like Ferrari and Lamborghini more (even when Porsche has more quality) but the game is the finest racing experience ever created and I like driving through the history of Porsche.

Oh my god, you should never cheat! Play the games as they are meant to be played. Otherwise you won't get the full experience. You kill everything with cheats. The only situation why I think cheats are Ok is when you already played the carreer mode to an end.

  16. #116
    Milan

Tuurngait, I never cheat in multiplayer and I prefer to play it with people that I trust to get the proper expirience. For me racing games are casual fun like PES(football) that are meant to be played in multiplayer with friends so that's why I am not willing to invest much time in whole career mode like you.

  17. #117
    Tuurngait

Okay, then we have different opinions of racing games. For me, multiplayer is only a nice-to-have feature, while the carreer is the most important thing. It's the reason why I find Project CARS boring, because the carreer is very weak designed. And a racing game is not about fun (except Mario Cart or Lego Racers etc.) but for Need For Speed I expect something more realistic. A reason why modern NFS are just mainstream bullshit for 10 years old action kids.

  18. #118
    Milan

Need For Speed was never about realism it was about driving expensive cars on exotic locations in different countries. First NFS and Porsche Unleashed are only two games that were fine mix beetwen arcade and realism but not pure realism. 2, 3, 4 and 6 were arcades. With NFS Underground the series died for me. Not that Underground and later games are bad but they are not what NFS should be. Here are the things that in my opinion should be in a good racing game:

    1. Cockpit View (This is the most important thing)
    2. 10-15 cars (Ferrari F40 or 50 is a must)
    3. 15-20 exotic tracks (I prefer tracks instead of sandbox city)
    4. Day, Night and weather changes
    5. Good driving model arcade or semi arcade
    6. Good graphics that are optimized even for the weak hardware
    7. Good cars sound
    8. Damage model that affects the car performance a little
    9. Good multiplayer with LAN support
    10. Some singleplayer modes like career for those who need this

Things that I don't want to see in racing game:

    1. Nitro (this is the worst thing that happened to racing games)
    2. Story (If i want story I would play Planescape Torment not NFS)
    3. Upgrades (I don't want to upgrade cars I want to drive cars that don't need upgrades and costs a tons of money. Different tire types for rain and dry weather and car color change would be enough)
    4. Points for this and points for that and other shit like that.

  19. #119
    Tuurngait

You wrote "good driving model" and then mentioned arcade. But I think arcade is the worst thing that can happen to a racing game. I don't want to play a dulled fun-racer like Burnout. I want a real driving experidnce. But the problem I have with these racing simulators is that they are about boing motorsport (only racing cars on circuits). As you mentioned a good racing game needs exotic tracks located in the most beautiful regions on earth. So it is very hard for me to find a racing game that has both: realistic physics and exotic tracks. The "World Racing" series are fantastic racing games. Maybe the only racing simulator with open-world tracks.

I agree in most cases with you except with the upgrades. I like to buy parts in carreer mode for my cars. A weather system is very important. Project CARS is the most beautiful racing game here.

  20. #120
    Milan

I preffer semi arcade or arcade cause total realism kills the fun factor for me. I don't like to drive in real life cause it's boring. If i had a private race track and expensive cars that would be nice but I am not a millionare. I would recommend you to try first Test Drive Unlimited(not second cause it's bad) if you like exotic locations and realistic physics but you must turn off driving aid and unlock hardcore mode. You have whole island to drive and good online community here: forum.turboduck.net
Give it a try cause I think you'll like it.

Veg, Default colors are in the game for me too light, there is a sort of haze of fog. If I compare Need for Speed: Porsche 2000 witch 16bit collors deep and 32bit collors deep, seems to as be the default page games Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit.

This Old_Games_Widescreen_Patch.rar helped me Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit II the correct aspect ratio.

PavelU, just disable the fog effect in the graphics settings of the NFS3 (this option is available in the Modern Patch v1.5). If it is not enough, try to use DX6 renderer (ThrashDriver=dx6 in the nfs3.ini). Any additional strange patches aren't needed.

Your link says that I am permanently banned on this board. But I've never been on this website at all. LOL :)

UPD. I had used a proxy to see your link. But there is screenshots of the NFS HP2, not NFS3 HP. It is an absolutely different game.

PavelU, why do you compare colors in NFS3 with Porsche Unleashed and NFS6? You can't expect them to be the same. Try to calibrate your monitor first. And why do we need link for NFS6 widescreen patch here? This topic is about NFS3 patch.

PavelU, it is a little bit hard to understand you.

Do you have any problems with the NFS3 Modern Patch v1.5.2? What is the purpose of your link to the Old_Games_Widescreen_Patch.rar? If you're using it to remove the fog effect in the NFS3, it is wrong path to do it. Reinstall clear version of the Modern Patch and just disable the fog effect in the graphics settings. This setting is available in the ingame settings.

The original version version of the NFS3 doesn't support the fog effect in the D3D mode, so it looks darker. And you can enable same thing using graphics settings in the NFS3 Modern Patch.

VEG, Problems not. But It solved the colors NfS3 and aspect ratio NfS6.

So patch certainly fits. Applied to NfS3, NfS6.

Previously, but I was unaware of the possibility to adjust the colors in NfS3. Turning off the fog definitely try. In NfS3 I would just like to see a better options cameras.

Milan, thanks for the tip with "Test Drive: Unlimited", but it still looks like an arcade racer for me. I highly recommend the "World Racing" franchise when you want real driving physics and beautiful 3D locations. You even can switch between arcade and simulation. It also has an interesting carreer mode and multiplayer. Unfortunately the servers are down, but you can play it via third-party servers. The graphics of this 2003 and 2005 released games are still fantastic.

  36. #137
    Milan

Tuurngait, on default settings is arcade but soon as you turn off driving aid completley and especially later when you unlock hardcore mode then it shines. There are always people online and you can just cruise with them on island or race. There are no retarded kids online mostly older guys and you can always chat with them and drive around. There is unoffical multiplayer client since official servers are dead but as I said just give it a try.
Here are the instructions(I just copy/pasted this from somwhere):

    1. Download this torrent cause it's contains official car megapack and latest official patch v1.66a : https://kat.cr/test-drive-unlimited-gold-2008-repack-by-rggames-t6973288.html

    2. Install patch 1.68b from here: http://forum.turboduck.net/threads/18022-TDU-Community-PATCH-168B
This is optional but I recommend it.

    3. Install this client from here: http://forum.turboduck.net/threads/29561-Test-Drive-Unlimited-Project-Paradise-v003A-PUBLIC-BETA-AVAILABLE

    4. Start the game with the client and type the nickname you want to use, your email and any password you want.

Are you from Germany? Can you check translation of the new settings in the patch?
Please check these settings (I'm providing English paths):
Options → Audio → Menu Tune (new random values)
Options → Audio → Racing Tune (new random values at the end of the list)

I'm german. "Schnelle" and "Langsame" should be changed into "Schnell" and "Langsam". Other than that, it's alright :)

    Hi VEG,

yes, I'm from Germany. But what's meant by "Schnell" and "Langsam"? The menu music speed? You mean fast and slow techno tracks? Personally I could not really differ between fast and slow techno in NFS3.

The patch is updated to the v1.5.3. Some bugs were fixed. This update is strongly recommended.

Tuurngait, Fast: Romulus 3, Triton, Pi. Slow: Minotaur, Whipped, Whacked.

I'll think about adding an option to fix proportions of 3D world in the future. But 4:3 rendered as 16:10 is too much, in this case the image is too flattened. If I'll do it, it will be a much more slight fix.

    Congrats for this amazing port!
    I found a bug, I think.

When using a controller I like to customize it’s buttons. After saving my controls and playing for a bit and then quit.
If next time that I run NFS3 I forget to plug my controller before running the .exe, if I go to the control screen my controls are reseted to default. Even if I try to quit the game and run it again but with the controller plugged in, all my controls (single player controls, two player controls) are still the default ones, so I have to reconfigure everything again :/

    I’m playing with a Xinput controller (PS3 DualShock 3 acting as a X360 pad).

    Suggestion:
Make it possible to control the menus using the D-PAD (POV) or analog sticks (AXIS). Also add a button to pause the game (esc in-game menu) with the controller.

Thanks, keep up the good work!

Great! Thank you very much VEG for adding an option to fix the world proportions! I really think that 4:3 @ 16:10 looks realistic, and you also would see more field-of-view (only very little cuts). But I am still happy about a slight fix. Really looking forward to this.

    Sir, you are awesome.
VEG, thank you so much for your work on NFS3 and NFS4 ! Im still playing both games with custom-cars. Your modern patch did not only improve stability/compatibility, it makes high quality car mods actually drivable. Putting the game to a new level in visual style, quality and performance.

And this is true for original hadware too!
I have tested your patch on an real Win98 rig (no VM) with a 3dfx Voodoo 5500. It runs just great. Its astonishing how well high poly mods run with the Modern Patch.

Only when exiting the game nfshs.exe always crashes (no big deal, really). In case you want to look into the issue, i saved the error dump:

    OS:Win98SE; CPU:AMD; GPU:Voodoo 5500

    Anyways, excellent work VEG :)

I want to make another suggestion:

Is the Eacsnd.dll some kind of hook for the engine's memory stream?
Would it be possible to increase the total amount of cars on a track (i.e. spawn more traffic)?
By default, NFS3 has more AI cars driving around than NFS4.

Do you see a way to have the same amount of cars in NFS4 like in NFS3, or even more?
    #rushhour

Thanks again VEG, keep it up.

PS: forgot to mention, my suggestion and the error dump is regarding your new NFS4 patch :)
